Abstract
From a gender perspective, this article contributes to the reconstruction and critique of
the genesis and development of the homonormative, vertical, and coercive paradigm
applied by educational leaders and administrators in Mexico during the period of 2006–
2018. Through a case study, the article analyzes the progress, stagnation, and setbacks
in gender equity regarding the formation of leadership positions. The theoretical
framework addresses sexism as a naturalized social practice, evidenced in the hidden
curriculum and the assignment of differentiated roles from childhood. The feminization
of certain educational areas and the masculinization of others are highlighted,
perpetuating inequalities in salaries, hierarchies, and access to benefits. Machismo and
hegemonic masculinity in schools reinforce stereotypes that hinder equity. Historically,
educational reforms have attempted to combat these inequalities, but significant gaps
persist, especially in rural and indigenous areas. Although women have higher rates of
school retention, their access to senior management positions remains limited. Surveys
show that men over 45 years of age dominate leadership roles, although female
participation is increasing. The study concludes that, to achieve true gender equity in
education, it is necessary to redirect leadership toward greater female inclusion,
promoting structural reforms that allow for equality in decision-making, salaries, and
representation at all educational levels.
Keywords: gender, education, equity, leadership, male
hegemony.
